Reconciliation Villages

Prison Fellowship Rwanda has been involved in the restoration of Rwandan social fabric which was destroyed by the 1994 genocide through practical healing and reconciliation. Reconciliation has remained a process, to uphold it is to make sure that what has been achieved remained a reality on the ground. 22 years after devastating genocide, PFR and its beneficiaries are committed to the process towards national unity and reconciliation as a pre-requisite for lasting peace, security, respect of human being, created in the image of God and this will boost social-economic development.

Prison Fellowship Rwanda has partnered with different organizations to build and maintain 7 Reconciliation Villages in Rwanda’s rural countryside. These include the villages of Rweru, Mbyo in Bugesera district, Mwili, Kageyo in Kayonza district, Kabarondo Reconciliation Village in Kayonza District, Ngoma reconciliation village in Ngoma district in Eastern province and Kimonyi reconciliation village in Musanze district in northern province. These villages are comprised of clusters of homes built for genocide offenders and victims. In many cases, victims live in the same villages with the very perpetrators who harmed them and their families in 1994. Members of these reconciliation communities have chosen to step beyond forgiveness and embrace reconciliation: they have committed to living together, working together, and caring for one another. Over 662 houses where constructed in seven villages for both genocide survivors and offenders in need, the exercises that was not easy but PFR considers as a great achievement and houses were built and accommodate nearly 4000 people.
