Ubumwe Project

PROJECT UBUMWE (Together/United) was conceived by Prison Fellowship Rwanda after had worked in the prisons of Rwanda, for more than 21 years, bringing a message of hope, redemption and restoration, through Christ, to Genocide perpetrators; encouraging them to repent and confess their complicity in the Genocide against the Tutsi of 1994 and to fully disclose every detail of their crimes.

Project Ubumwe is a practical reconciliation initiative conceived by Prison Fellowship Rwanda in partnership with the Word for All Nations to help and encouraging inmates that desired to seek for forgiveness (those that have personally written confession letters to the prison directors) disclosing every detail of their crime by confessing their crimes committed during 1994 genocide against the Tutsi. Ubumwe was conceived to bringing a message of hope, redemption and restoration through Christ to the prisoners in all prisons, encouraging them to confess their complicity in the Genocide against the Tutsi of 1994, disclosing every detail of their crime with a goal to support the perpetrators, victims, their families and communities together affected by the Genocide in order to affect reconciliation and restoration on a deep heart and practical level.

More than 3000 prisoners subsequently made written confessions to the Director of the Prisons, confessing every aspect of their crimes and expressing a need to ask forgiveness of the victims in person. The need to ask forgiveness also extended to their own families.  To deal with such an overwhelming number of perpetrators and victims, social cohesion and trust are very important pillars of the process.  PFR work within prisons and communities and the lessons learned over many years have helped us in shaping Project Ubumwe. It is the only project working specifically with incarcerated perpetrators who are now repenting and want to be reconciled to their victims and their families. Prison Fellowship Rwanda brought more than 594 victims and offenders together to talk about forgiveness and repentance and experience reconciliation.
